Blog Comment Assignment - Stereotypes in popular media

19 comments:

  1. I played a Modern Warfare II last night. There were black and white characters killing terrist (a middle-east guy with a long beard and a turban). Afro-American were terrist as well. There were no Asian people because they are not tough enough to fight in the war. WWII, the Asians were only suicide bombers. There were no females in the video game. If you die there were no medical people.
In this video game all the terrist were either black or middle east. There were no white terrists.
In movies, why does a black guy never survive in a horror movie?

  2. Last night i watched pirates of the carribean( At Worlds end) And i noticed that thers not many "black" Pirates in the film. The only one i noticed was in the first P.O.T.C, and Tia Dalma in the second and third. The "Hero's" In the movie are the white pirates, yet the "Monsters" are either Davy Jones, or the Dark Tia Dalma. This and many other movies show how "dark" Actors are considered monsters or the tough characters that cause destruction to society.

  3. In some movies they show how Asian people are always the tough ones. For example, "Rush Hour" the movie show that Jacky Chan is always the one who does tricks and Chris Tucker is some guy who tries to look as cool as Jacky Chan. But with humor, Chris successfully fails. Jacky does many tricks that many other races 'supposedly' don't have the abilities and skills to achieve. I usually see Asian people doing something similar, but not as much as other race.

  4. One of the episodes in South Park had a type of racial stereotype of a chinese guy named Tuong Lu Kim, the ONLY chinese person in the city. He has a chinese accent which is exagerated in the show (stereotypical chinese accent)He is also asked to build a wall to protect South Park and he claims that the city is being stereotypical. Just because he's chinese doesn't mean he can go around building walls(stereotype: great wall of china)
Marge simpson is an example of a stereotype, as she is considered the "housewife" and should do everything while Homer sits around.
For one of the seasons in desperate housewives, Eva Longoria has to gain weight and cut her hair to portray a "worn out mother of 3" That's a stereotype of saying that all hardworking mothers are fat and have short hair.
-Music videos that contain men who are more dominant than women, and that woman should be gentle, nice, pretty, and skinny.

  5. Continued...

    All in YouTube.

    - There's this video on YouTube about black men in an elevator with white people. White people assume that black people would snatch their belongings, but apparently they're provoking a savage attack instead of protecting themselves.
    - Apparently, people with the same race is allowed to speak whatever they want behind the outsiders, because the outsiders don't really have the right to say anything back.
    - On YouTube I watched "European Racism". There's a coloured soccer player who "plays a goal for the Spanish club team". His own fans has been taunting him non-stop. Treating him like he's an animal.
    - Asians, black (etc.) people were the once who usually does tough work than white people. White people take an advantage of them and do what they please.

    My story:

Somewhere in the summer I wanted to apply a job at a mall. I went to a clothing store to apply and the manager was Asian. I spoke with him saying things that he is looking for. He kept telling me to come back later or something like that, so I did. I kept coming back since he wanted me to. The last day I went there, he told me that I'm not suited for the job because I'm a 'typical' teenager who will always do something wrong. I told him that I wouldn't be that, surprisingly he didn't believe me. I looked around and I saw older Asian people. JUST ASIAN people working there. I didn't see any other race except for Asians.

  6. Males often get job easier than females and get the higher salary because people may think males may have more ability than females sometimes. They also convince that males are more powerful and greater status which should be much respected. Even the comics hold this view. In every comics I have read, there must be a superman inside but not a superwomen instead (in Crisis on Infinite Earths, it used to be a superwomen inside but she died quite quickly because her powerless). When we think of a super hero, we may consider it a male at first.

  9. Two and a half men is a prime example of men in the power role and woman only seen as objects. Woman are often talked about and rarely seen on the show, and when they are talked about it’s about sex. The only strong female role in the show is an unattractive house cleaner. And the main male role is an alcoholic man who cannot commit to a relationship.

Vampire Diaries is a show with the lead girl being a white female and her ‘best friend’ or sidekick being a black female. The black female seems to always play the supportive role.

In the original version of the 1939 movie ‘The Woman’, may seem to be supporting woman in power but in the movie the lead female in the movie finds out that her husband is cheating on her she goes to a divorce camp for woman without husbands. Showing the woman cannot function without a man.

On ‘King of the Hill’ the lead male characters next door neighbor is a ‘typical’ Asian man. A strike farther, has a strong Korean accent, and his white neighbors hate him.

  10. I was watching a movie on YouTube, “This Cat Betrayed His Girlfriend‏”. It shows two cats having an argument, but one of the cats didn’t have a say. In this movie, there are both racism and sexism. The cat that didn’t have a say was a black coloured cat, which symbolizes that “black” people in a “white” society do not get to express their thoughts. This is an example of racism. The cat that was yelling symbolizes how women in general are very loud and don’t give a chance for other people to explain the situation, which is an example of sexism.

  11. I was watching a Indian movie and it was really racist because in the movie they payed such close attention to the brown people and followed there every move and didn't care what the other colored people did. It really stood out. They just assume that the brown people are going to do something bad just because something happend before like the next thing you know someone of other color does something then there going to realize that not only one color is causing all the trouble it's everyone. In the movie the police had all the power they were mainly white but there was a couple black people too. But was there any brown cops? Nope.

  12. I was watching two shows on the CW network last night and I realized something: in both the show "life unexpected" as well as "gossip girl" the cast is headlined by an all-white community. I only saw five minutes of LA but as for gossip girl some things I have noticed were that all of the upperclass rich youth are all white people, while the only people of colour I have noticed were either one of the mean girls or one of the character's mother who was being accused of being wierd and too politically charged. Also, there is another woman who is being suspected of infedility with one of the older male characters.
It seems as though the only role they place in the show is to either play a role in blackmailing or else something that is frowned upon. It also creates the illusion that there are no rich black people in new York.

  13. I was watching a movie last night and it was about a black cop that lived next to a white guy. In the movie it showed that the black person was mean and always controlling over his children but while the white family let their children do whatever they wanted. Also in the movie it showed that the black cop was into drugs and alcohol while partying with friends, while the white family was civilized and well mannered. I also realized that in the movie the white father and mother taught their kids that the black cop was bad and not go near him. In this movie the family and the community was racist and stereotypical towards the black cop just because of his colour.

  14. I was watching a brazilian movie its about drug trafficking and only black people are the only ones who buy the drugs and also they are the only ones who do sells the drugs to black people, and the cops are white people there`s no black people in the police they only talks that in the movie the bad guys is the black people and the cops go to the "favela" and they took all the black people and put in the jail, when the movie shows the jail there is no white people just black and asians. That is very racist to peoples who l lives in Brazil, and the public are very ignorant in Brazil, thats in Brazil this movie is the best one.

  15. In the movie "Uptown Girls", the little girl, Faye, comes from an incredibly wealthy family. But since she has money of course this means that she is a spoiled brat who always gets what she wants, right?
In the recent movie, "The Blind Side", even though it is based on a true story, it shows the "ghetto" and how only black people live there. It shows that they do drugs and just want to fight and of course do not care for any education.
On the tv show MadTV they have the actors play various characters of different races, genders, etc. expressing the most obvious stereotypes.
In the tv show, 90210 (the new one), the character that has the most family problems ends up being the goth/druggy etc. =
I'll give you another one tomorrow. I really do not watch any tv Mr. Miller!

  17. I've read this book called "Hollywood Hills" and there was a part where this girl saw two gay guys and she described them as bald white guys who wore tight jeans and v neck shirts with gay sounding voice and i saw a tv show as well describing the same description for gay guys. Why do people think they are always bald white guys? Whoever the director was for the show i can tell he was being very stereotypical because not all gay guys look the same

In the show “Family Guy” I noticed that when Peter Griffin turned bad and into drugs he was usually with black friends. In this T.V show it stereotyped that black people are bad and scary and when people refer to the words “gangster” and “scary” it’s usually referring to a black person.

I was watching the movie “Panic Room” and in this movie it showed that people broke into a house that a Caucasian mother and daughter lived in. In the movie it showed that a black guy was the mastermind behind the break in. It stereotyped that the black guy was mean and bad.

I was watching a Hindi movie and it was about this Hindu girl who loved a Muslim man and she was killed because her family didn’t want her marrying this Muslim man because he was thought to be a terrorist.

I was watching “Harold and Kumar” and in this movie in the part where they were in the plane the white lady saw Kumar and pictured him to be a terrorist. This is stereotypical because just because he was brown she pictured him to be a terrorist.

  19. In Snoop Dogg's video "Who Am I? (What's My Name?)" they show that black people don't have a lot of money and they live in a ghetto area, underneath a bridge, guys turn into doggs, they have sexy women dancing around them at all times and hot fast cars. It makes you attractive to that lifestyle, because it looks exciting and playful like a dogg.
