  1. I read the letter from 1911. In early 1900's, life was similar to now was, we go to school, girls were able to go to school. Life was different, kids were able to drop out of school in grade four and their clothing was different. We can learn about Canada from studying old family letters and pictures by comparing life then and now.

  3. In the 1900's, It was similiar because we were allowed to go to school and The social classes were the same.
It was different because they didnt have medicine to cure someone that was sick like antibiotics. And most kids dropped out before they finished elementary school.
What we can learn from pictures and letters is how canada was by comparing the similarites and differences. And learning about the history.

  4. 1.)How was life in the early 1900's similar to yours now?
    - In “The Healthy Home” letter of 1910 it proves that all homes back then had the same appliances and structure as we do now. In the letter of 1913 it says that most people hit more than one job before reaching the one that best suited them this is similar to today because most people go through more than one job.

    2.)How was life different?
    - In 1910 unmarried women were not allowed to live alone or room with other girl friends, but now all women are free to live the way they want. Children worked long ours out of school and most dropped out before finishing elementary school, but now in the modern days there aren’t many children that drop out of school our that have to work in order to keep there families alive.

3.)What can we learn about Canada from studying old family letters and pictures?
    - Some things that we can learn by studying old family letters and pictures are the lifestyle that they lived in and the way they dressed. It can also teach us the way people felt towards the law and order n those days. Old letters can also prove to us about how people in the olden days felt about there environment.

  5. It seemed in many of the letters that relationships dominate the conversation. One example is in Edith’s letter to her Mother on Feb. 10, 1908. She discusses her relationship with Mr. C, but assures her mother that they are not getting “too thick” and that he has a fiancĂ© back home in Ireland. She then goes on to describe how Mr. Young has “spoiled the pleasure” of going into town. The letter reminded me of some of the current TV shows I’ve watched with my wife like Gossip Girl with a lot of social drama. The way Edith describes Mae as a “Great Flirt” and Gordon as a “Big Baby” is similar to something out of a prime-time soap opera.

The biggest thing that struck me as different was the clothing in the pictures. People were far more conservative in their dress then. I took a course at UVic where we looked at history through fashion. We looked at the way people dressed, the styles, the colours, the materials they used. It was all very telling of the makeup of the society we were studying.

I find it a bit troubling to know that despite all of the troubles going on in Canada at that time, like lack of suffrage for all people, most people were just like we are today; oblivious to the world around us. While the problems facing us today are different, like growing poverty, we are still too concerned with ourselves instead of others.

Looking at primary sources like pictures and letters can give us an authentic look at the way people lived in a historical period. It gives us an opportunity to connect that is impossible to get from reading secondary sources like textbooks. Primary documents like these are essential for any student of history to gain an understanding of the past.

  6. 1) In the early 1900's, children were educated and attended school, similar how life is now. Teachers worked hard to help their students learn, however not all students were determined. Family life in the 1900s was somewhat similar to life today. Children returned from school on a daily basis and had dinner/supper with their family and also helped around the house.
As indicated in the pictures, life back in day was obviously more stressful. People had to travel on horses, since transportation was not as developed as today. Woman usually wore long dresses covering most of their skin, while we wear clothes that aren't the same as others.

    2) From looking at pictures and studying letters in the 1900s we can learn about how people lived, how they made money, what kind of laws there were, the society these people lived in, etc. Not only do we get to take a look and learn about at some of the history in the 20th century, but we can also compare & contrast to the present and see how these people got through such a complicated and difficult life. Pictures help us visual what everything looked like before.

  7. 1.) How was life in the early 1900's similar to yours now?
In the '1913 letters' says there were 6 men who wanted to propose to Margaret McLeod, but she only chose one of course. She chose the man who is "reasonable, responsible man who respects her." This is similar to today's situations because, women doesn't want to be with the man they would regret for the rest of their lives. Women wants to feel right with their men.
Children attented school and they had a job or two to make a living. Those two are still going on right now.

    2.) How was life different?
In the '1908 letters' discusses how women teachers dressed and how they had to live. The middle-class women were dressed differently and they made their own clothes to save money. If they were not married they were not allowed to live alone or live with any of their girl friends.
Those are very different to what is going on right now. These days women who are teachers can afford any types of clothes they want and they could live anywhere they want.

3.) What can we learn about Canada from studying old family letters and pictures?
We can learn them by comparing what it was like back then and now. It helps us visualize what it was like before - How complicated it was and what they basically did to live.

  8. Similar: There was a great deal of importance placed on marriage and dating. The skating rink, movie theater, and cafes were popular destinations for courtship where many young men and women gather and mingle. There also was a lot of gossip going on during those times, people chatted about their relationships and social lives.

Different: Unmarried women had to live in boarding homes and could not live with roommates or on their own whereas now single women are free to liver wherever they want. Also their clothing is a lot more conservative as well as more extravagant. They wore corsets to control the size and shape of their waists as well as giant hats. There was a very different perception of beauty back then that would not necessarily be found as beautiful these days.

What we can learn: By looking at historical pictures and letters, we can view firsthand the lives of the people who lived during that time. Instead of just reading paragraphs in textbooks about how people lived during that time, there is a recollection showing a real persons experiences, proving that they were people just like us with feelings, thoughts, and opinions.

  9. Life in the 1900's is similar to my life now because just like then, people are constantly inventing and modern life is constantly changing. As of now, the war in the middle-east had been going on for 9 years. In the 1900's war was everywhere all the time. I think it sad that we still cannot find a better way to 'win' something.

Now we have a strong freedom of speech and thought. Although, there still is racism, people are proving everyday that we can fight it. In the 1900's, white men were the only people with a voice. Woman are equals, as are blacks and asians.

We can learn that people actually lived that life. Most people had to suffer through a life of fear. Where I can go out and be pro-gay or hangout with my friends of other races. Even with the wars and racism that still go on in our world, it had greatly improved. And i espcially am proud to Canadian.

  10. How is it similar:
Some things that are similar to my life now and life in the 1900's is that there are still war happening in the world, and that some families still have members oversea for different proposes.
    How is it different:
Some differences are that nowadays, people use the phone, text messages, emails to communicate with each other instead of actually writing a letter and mailing it. Also in the pictures, the clothing on the people was very different from the clothes that we wear today.
    What we can learn:
From the letters and pictures, we can learn about the different lifestyles in the 1900's, what people used to wear and how Canada looked like back then.

  11. 1.) Life today compared to life in 1900's was similiar in ways like kids went to school like kids do today.

2.) On the other hand kids were dropping out of school before they even finished elementary school. Kids today don't drop out of elementary school.

3.)By studying letters from the 1900's and visualizing pictures we can compare life from then up to life today. By doing this it gives us ideas how people lived in those days.

what is different from the 1900's and now there fashion is very different alot more covered and clasic and what we were now

  13. 1)life today is like life in the 1900s because, there was education and some jobs were sorta the same like teaching. and lots of kids went to school.

  14. Life is similar from now & the 1900's because:
    - It seems that skating rinks and cafe's were popular places to go back then just as they are now. It may just be the ones that I read that they were talked about alot though!
    - This is probably a pretty obvious one but children went to school daily and learnt to get a successful job later on in life.

Life is different from now & the 1900's because:
    - It may be just the letters I read, but it seemes that children back in the old days didn't really know how to use grammer or it wasn't really expected of them. Like I said it may just be the ones that I read.
    - Even though we still communicate with one another, our ways of doing it are much more convient and quicker. (E-mail, phone, instant messaging, texting, etc...)
    - When they couldn't afford wood for the firepit they froze all night, now and days we would always find a way to be warm!

What we can learn from old time letters/pictures:
    - We can learn the kind of lifestyle they lived and what was going on that they had to write to their parents and why they weren't living with them. We could also learn the way they dressed, looked etc.

  15. 1- It was similar because education was available to people who were willing to learn, people also travelled to Canada from different countries, that occurs still today.

2- Differences from then and now: Technology & Transportation has been upgraded & has made life easier for people who live today.

3- This helps us learn about the culture and lifestyle of people who lived in Canada at the very start.

  16. It is kinda similar from 1900's to now is that people went to school and wore uniforms where as public schools you don't, boys went to school and girls werent allowed now both genders attend school on a regular basis. Now students have a lot more choices in what we want to take in school like electives, it helps keep a journal to look back on history.
